Stay young forever

In today’s world, even 35-year-olds are worried about ageing, not realising that worrying itself could lead to a stray wrinkle here and there. The answer to ageless beauty lies not as much in beauty products and injectables like botox and miracles of plastic surgery as it does in simple lifestyle.

Stay young forever

The other day, I was sitting with the chairman of a well-known domestic airline. His skin looked completely dehydrated and I was trying to suggest some solutions. His exquisite chamber overlooked a plush green expanse of never-ending trees, beautifully trimmed bushes and the rarest of flowers.

What surprised me was that there was a huge window but but no balcony to breathe in the fresh air. Hydrating your skin with fresh air and keeping it away from the maladies of air conditioning is extremely important.

A five-minute skin cleansing, toning and moisturising routine and having a healthy lifestyle can work wonders for your skin. Here are some wonderful skin toners and tighteners that can be created from natural ingredients.

Apple cider oily and combination toner

200ml apple cider, 1tsp powdered camphor, 1 drop witchazel
Mix all the ingredients and store in a bottle and use it to wipe skin three times a day. The ingredients will help tone and clean the skin as well as increase blood circulation.

Honey and rose toner for dehydrated and dry skin

200ml of pure rose water, 2tsp raw honey, 2 drops lavender essential oil
Mix all the ingredients well and store in a bottle in the fridge. Wipe the skin with this three times a day for cleansing, toning and moisturising.

Egg white skin souffle

2 egg whites, whipped till it peaks and put in freezer, 1tsp honey, 1tsp china clay
Clean the skin and mix these ingredients and brush onto the skin with a broad flat brush and relax. Let it dry completely [avoid talking] and wash off with ice water and pat dry. This is excellent to fade out fine lines and wrinkles.

Papaya porcelain mask

2 cubes mashed papaya, 2tsp grated cucumber, 2tsp fullers earth, a pinch of powdered camphor BP, 1 egg white, rose water to mix to a smooth paste
Mix all the ingredients and apply on a clean skin. Let dry and wash off with lukewarm water and pat dry.

Honey age care

3 tsp raw honey, 2tsp fresh cream, 50 gms beeswax, 1tsp wheat germ oil, 1tsp olive oil
Heat the beeswax in a double boiler and add all the ingredients except the fresh cream, stir in well and let cool. On cooling add the fresh cream and stir well until it becomes a smooth consistency. Pour into a glass air-tight jar and refrigerate. Massage for 20 min. You can safely store this in the fridge for up to 10 days. It is an excellent skin polisher and hydrater.

Nine in ten Bright women cheat their way to looking sexy!

Over 90 percent of Brit women cheat their way to look sexy, which includes rubbing haemorrhoid cream under their eyes to hide bags.

Nine in ten Brit women cheat their way to looking sexy!

That's the conclusion of a new survey, which revealed tricks used by women to look stunning.

The poll conducted on 1,300 women at Essex's huge Lakeside Shopping Centre found that women use tricks like smearing vaseline on their calves to make their legs look longer.

And 42 percent admitted to pulling on magic pants to conceal tummy bulges and podgy bums just like celebs Reese Witherspoon, Charlotte Church and Kimberley Walsh of Girls Aloud.

Thirty seven percent revealed they use fake tan and ten per cent shove breast enhancers known as chicken fillets in their bras.

The same number confessed they used dimmed lighting in romantic situations to hide wrinkles or wobbly bits.

"It's surprising how many cheat their way to a sexier look," The Sun quoted Lakeside's Angela Poplett, as saying.

Surprisingly the survey also brought to light that 61 percent of women get decked up to please themselves rather than a man.

Chewing gum helps reduce stress

Chewing gum was found to help relieve anxiety, improve alertness and reduce stress among individuals, according to a new study.

Chewing gum helps reduce stress

Andrew Scholey, professor of Behavioural and Brain Sciences, Swinburne University, Australia led the study, based on 40 volunteers averaging 22 years.

The study was done on the Defined Intensity Stressor Simulation (DISS), a multi-tasking platform which reliably induces stress and also includes performance measures, while chewing and not chewing gum.

While chewing gum, participants reported lower levels of anxiety. They showed a reduction in anxiety as compared to non-gum chewers by nearly 17 per cent during mild stress and nearly 10 per cent in moderate stress.

Participants experienced greater levels of alertness when they chewed gum. They showed improvement in alertness over non-gum chewers by nearly 19 pe rcent during mild stress and eight percent in moderate stress.

Stress levels were also lower. Levels of salivary cortisol (a physiological stress marker) in gum chewers were lower than those of non-gum chewers by 16 per cent during mild stress and nearly 12 per cent in moderate stress.

Chewing gum resulted in a significant improvement in overall performance on multi-tasking activities. Both gum-chewers and non-chewers showed improvement from their baseline scores.

However, chewing gum improved mean performance scores over non-gum chewers by 67 per cent during moderate stress and 109 per cent in mild stress.

These findings were presented on Saturday at the 10th International Congress of Behavioural Medicine, Rissho University in Tokyo.

Homes Of America's Billionaires

Forbes.com staff, Forbes.com

Billionaires hoping to escape Wall Street's bad news need look no further than their own homes. If their portfolios are shrinking, they'll find plenty there to distract them.

David Geffimageen's Pollock and Rothko paintings line the walls of his 100-room Beverly Hills, Calif., mansion. Paul Allen can dock his 416-foot yacht--the Octopus--beside his Mercer Island, Wash., waterfront property. And Bill Gates can shut the world out in his 60-foot swimming pool with an underwater music system, just steps from his 66,000-square-foot home on the edge of Lake Washington near Seattle.

Queen of big dreams

It all began in 1968 with four hand block printers and two tables in a small village in Calcutta. Forty years hence, Ritu Kumar is a leading light of Indian fashion, dressing beauty queens with unfailing regularity and never missing a step with style.

She has to her credit the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini award and Chevalier des Arts et des Lettre (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters), conferred upon her by France this year. Itee Dewan traces some lighter moments of her long journey.

“It’s just a number. It Queen of big dreams really doesn’t seem like four decades,” says Kumar. She started with research on the textiles and prints of the country in 1966-67. Next came trips to the culturally rich states of Rajasthan, UP and Delhi (she was in Calcutta then).

Just after she went into business, Kumar suffered what she calls a career low: “I held an exhibition of about 30 hand print saris in Calcutta. The show was a complete disaster.” She understood that no one wanted to buy “a print which looked like a bedcover on thick handloom cotton”. More so at a time when colonial influence was at its peak. She reintroduced the print in chiffon and that collection was a sellout. This, she says, was her career high.

A few years later, she had a curious encounter — on a flight to Calcutta, a co-passenger recognised her and asked why she had stopped hand block prints on saris. He rued that his business was on the rocks because he didn’t have designs to copy! Though stunned by his audacity, Kumar also recognised the compliment.

Her first boutique in Delhi was opened in 1968 in Defence Colony. “It faced a railway crossing. People inevitably got stuck there, and thanks to that, my store got a branding.” A small boutique in Calcutta followed and, as they say, the rest is history.

Didn’t it hurt to see her designs copied? “Imitation is constant,” Kumar says. “The only way out is to move on. In fact, today I’ll be worried if my designs are not being copied.”

Do you suffer from discomgoogolation?

How much do you rely on the Internet? Probably more than you want to admit. Well a recent study found that Internet addicts suffer from extreme stress when they can't access a computer, especially when they're out and about. Psychologist Dr David Lewis says people need to make quick decisions when they're out, and some feel they're not making the best choices without the information the Internet gives them.

image

Internet addiction is not officially recognized as a clinical disorder, but researchers say Internet dependency can affect a person emotionally as well as physically. This stressful state, called 'discomgoogolation,' affected heavy Web users in the study who experienced increased blood pressure and brain activity when they couldn't access the Internet.

Just to give you an idea, the stress of being offline was compared to the feeling you get when you're about to take an important exam, when you're late to an important meeting, or when fired from your job. That's some heavy stressing.

A total of 2,100 men and women were tested for this study, and it seems men were most affected in the evenings when they couldn't get online, while women suffered more during the day. Both groups agreed that Friday was the most stressful day to be disconnected because they couldn't plan their weekend.

Apparently, as many as 87 percent of those surveyed said they now rely on the Web for all their information, and 26 percent said they wouldn't know where else to look if they didn't have access to the Web.

Geez, makes you wonder what we ever did without the Internet. I love having the Web at my fingertips, but I wouldn't say I depend on it to plan my weekends. What about you? Do you need the Internet to help you make decisions all the time?

Come to our Fairy party... A photo essay

It was such a fun and cute party.  They all made little fairy houses for the fairies that live in our neighborhood!  They got to decorate them however they chose.  There were stickers, paint and fabric galore!  We used plastic animal cracker jugs and milk cartons that were painted a solid color before the party.

The girls had SO much fun making their craft and of course playing together.  They all had little fairy dolls and long colorful hair headbands as well just for fun!

Of course my son was there but he refused to make a fairy house! :)  He decided to make a bug house and had a blast.

My daughter is very proud of her new Fairy House and it's up on the kitchen counter, she hoping to "catch" a fairy very soon!

And our snacks were heavenly and delicious... Fun, tasty and healthy "bug" snack!

Attract your girl with self-deprecating humour

When it comes to seducing a woman, nothing, as it turns out, works better than a man with a self-deprecating sense of humour.

Attract your girl with self-deprecating humour

This finding is based on a two-year scientific research which found that men who can poke fun at themselves are most the ones that are sexual magnets for women.
As a part of the study lead author Gil Greengross, of the University of New Mexico in the US and her colleagues asked female students to listen to tape recordings of men talking about themselves.
The women were then asked to score the men on sexual attractiveness.
Greengross revealed that when it comes to the type of humour that works best at getting a woman into bed, the self-deprecating kind comes in at the top of the pack.
"Many studies show that a sense of humour is sexually attractive to women but we've found that self-deprecating humour is the most attractive of all," the Telegraph quoted Greengross, as saying.
"People who used this humour were considered to be far more desirable as mates."
He added a note of caution however, saying that it can also draw attention to a man's real faults, thus turning women off.
"It is a risky form of humour because it can draw attention to one's real faults, thereby diminishing the self-deprecator's status in the eyes of others," he said.
"Think about the secondary school child whom nobody liked, who makes fun of his shortcomings.
"His peers mocked him and he was considered more pathetic than he was previously.
"This is high-risk seduction. It is not for everyone."

Women prefer straight-talking sexist men

When it comes to men, women prefer straight-talking sexist ones who speak their mind, according to a new study.

Women prefer straight-talking sexist men!

Despite years of protests from many angered by sexist blokes, the survey found that women are more unnerved by not knowing a man’s views on their place in the world than by overtly sexist attitudes.

To reach the conclusion, hundreds of women from the University of California were asked their views in tests taken in a variety of fictional office sets.

Students taking the test in an office full of pictures of nude women fared the best, while women in the neutral office, featuring just a few stacks of paper, scored the worst.

“Ironically, if you know your enemy you’ve got a better chance of dealing with it than if you are constantly wondering whether you will be judged unfairly,” The Daily Star quoted study leader Dr Rodolfo Mendoza-Denton, as saying.

Key to successful flirting

You may have tried several ways of flirting. But, if a new study is to be believed, the secret to a successful fling is simple — if you fancy someone, just tell that person.

Key to successful flirting

Previous studies emphasised the importance of natural beauty and physical features, including facial symmetry and voice pitch. Now, a team at Aberdeen University has revealed that the science of attraction lies in 'social cues'.

According to researchers, if one expresses one's feelings to someone through eye contact, smiling or simply by telling, "I really like you", then that person is more likely to return the sentiment.

"Our latest research highlights how social cues, which signal the extent to which others are attracted to you, also play a crucial role in attraction," lead researcher Ben Jones was quoted by The Daily Telegraph as saying.

In fact, in their study, the researchers came to the conclusion after carrying out an experiment on a group of 230 men and women — all the subjects were shown four flash cards, each depicting a face with a different expression.

These included a person making eye contact and not smiling, someone not making eye contact but smiling, not making eye contact and not smiling, and making eye contact and also smiling.

"What we found was that the preference for the attractive face was much stronger when people were judging those faces that were looking at them and smiling," Jones explained.

The study, published in the latest edition of the Psychological Science journal, concluded that attractiveness was actually how someone in the group combined natural beauty and the 'social cues'.

The most romantic thing for couples

Cuddling in the car to watch the sun go down has been voted the most romantic thing for a couple to do.

The most romantic thing for couples

According to a survey, more than half the Britons said that sunsets made them frisky.

Thirty four per cent of 1,000 people interviewed said candlelit dinners were most likely to lead to lovemaking.

While eight per cent opted for sharing a bubble bath.

“The range of stunning colours displayed in a sunset can create a feeling of shared calm and happiness,” The Sun quoted behavioural expert Judi James, as saying.

Unfortunately, only two per cent of those polled for Vauxhall Motors had actually seen a sunset in the UK in the past year.

Beauty tips

What keeps you looking this good?

My daily skincare regimen involves cleansing, toning and moisturising. Healthy skin needs mild cleansing, for which I use gentle soaps. I use products that are mild and do not strip my skin of essential proteins. I am not much of a make-up user and stick to basics like a moisturiser, lip balm and a neutral foundation.

I don’t go for regular facials, but do indulge in clean-up sessions once in a while. Also, I am very particular about taking off the make-up before I go to bed. As a ritual, I like to luxuriate in a relaxing body massage with lukewarm coconut or baby oil every week. I think working towards maintaining a healthy body should be a priority for everyone. It is also equally important to maintain a high emotional quotient and a positive attitude towards life.

How do you take time out for yourself after a hectic work schedule?

image

I take care of myself with homemade remedies and a balanced diet. Working towards maintaining a healthy body should be a priority for everyone. I try and work out as often as possible. Since, I travel regularly, it becomes difficult for me to have a daily workout routine, but whenever I hit the gym I do cardio training and some light weights.

Thanks to my years dedicated to badminton, I have an athletic body. Also, since relaxation matters, no matter how busy my shooting schedules are, I always keep some quality time aside for family and friends.

What is your beauty advice for all the girls out there?

A healthy lifestyle, nutritious diet and the correct skincare and fitness regimen all go hand in hand to make possible a beautiful you today and tomorrow. I am a firm believer in skincare the natural way. I am careful about using skincare products that are the right mix of nature and science.

One should never try to go overboard on any products, as I think the more you try to be experimental with your skin, the worse it gets. Just stick to the basics of skincare and witness the splendid results. There are a host of natural effective products available that are a better bet than harsh chemically enhanced ones.

How important is a healthy diet for looking beautiful?

A healthy diet is the first step towards a healthy and fit body. I take a balanced diet with carbs and proteins, and I’m very particular about dietary proportions. I have three main meals in a day, breakfast being the most important of them all. I try to keep my meals balanced and simple.

What are your reasons for being associated with the brands that you represent?

I associate myself with a brand that I can identify with. I have felt in tune with these brands and hence the association. Brands which signify style, good looks, youth, fun and have a universal appeal are the ones that I associate myself with. (Deepika endorses Fiama Di Wills, Kingfisher, Maybelline, Levi’s Strauss, Tissot, Pepsi.) I am also very conscious of the quality of the brands I endorse.

How to hide an office romance

Office romance isn’t a new phenomenon, it’s been around from the time, offices have been around, after all when you are spending most of your waking hours in the same environment it isn’t easy to fight attractions or temptations. Three out of five romances have their roots in the office boardroom or cafeteria. Though when you are in love, screaming about it atop the bossHow to hide an office romance’ table is very tempting, you should keep your euphoric feelings under check and read your employment contract’s fine print once again. Most offices have an anti-romance policy. Forget romance, many offices don’t permit married couples to work under the same roof. Bottom-line is, management frowns upon office love stories. So it’s better that you keep your feelings and emotions under check.

If your romance is revealed there are chances that both of you will be considered a distraction not only for each other but for others as well. You will not be taken seriously. You will constantly be ribbed about it, and after a point it will get to you. You will not be given plum assignments if your love is also on it, so for no fault of yours you will lose out on key projects. At get-togethers and other events, when you should be spending time networking you will be the cynosure of all eyes, making it an awkward situation for both. So here are 7 ways to put the cloak of secrecy on your relationship, after it could make all the difference between an employed and unemployed status.

1. Build a wall around yourself: If before Cupid made its mark on you, you were the type who believed in eating solo, not socializing too much with colleagues or leaving office solo, then stick to the same. Don’t ever change your regular routines. It is very tempting to spend every minute with the love of your life, but restrain, keep those hormones under check. Don’t do anything that will arouse the suspicion of your colleagues. Be like a wall, no one should have an access to what’s happening in that thumping heart of yours. You can make eye contact with the light of your eyes, but make sure no one’s watching. Stealing a kiss or two is highly risky, unless you are in a lift with concealed doors and sans cctvs. Try and avoid any contact with your love during office hours, you have all the post office hours to make up for it. Under no circumstance should you reveal the state of your heart with your colleagues/ friends at work, it will only complicate matters and in no time will you both become the topic of conversation in office. This is exactly why office romances don’t find favour with bosses!

2. Put in more into your work: Concentrate on your work. Your romance shouldn’t affect your work. If you are mooning about her, while working or are distracted and day dreaming all the time, you will be caught out in no time and it will signal the end of your tryst there. Instead let your work be your strength, it will be the perfect shield for your distractions.

3. Keep your love in the loop: Don’t work on these tips without taking your sweetheart into confidence. Explain to her why you are behaving thus, if not you will have to contend with a sullen lover at work and nothing can be worse than that!

4. Don’t send her love proclamations: This is another tip you have to follow. Under no circumstances should you leave any proof of your love. Do not use office stationery to send love notes, if it gets into the hands of your boss, you will surely get another note from him, which will not have anything to do with love! Do not send email from your official addresses, it can easily be tracked down and the next thing you both will see will probable be the door!

5. Never leave and enter office together: The best way to behave would be like complete strangers. Never ever walk in or leave office together. No offering lifts, unless accompanied by a third party. Office picnics and other events are also dangerous territories where you will be tempted to let your hair down, never forget that in the rosy mood of an outing or a party you will be encouraged to reveal your amorous side, but the downside will be the next day when you both will be the fodder for the gossip mills. In fact the best advise will be for either of you to avoid going for such events! You might miss out on the fun, but at least you will have your job in hand!

How to Breastfeed

As natural as nursing is, it can prove difficult for some women. We show you how to get it right.

A mother nursing her baby -- it's one of the most beautiful images nature could create. It's also one of the simplest. Breastfeeding is so natural, in fact, that we've been doing it for millions of years. (Indeed, without it, the human race wouldn't have survived.)
But don't be fooled: For some women, the first few days or weeks of breastfeeding are a challenge. "Breastfeeding is natural, but it's a practiced skill, almost an art form," says Corky Harvey, R.N., M.S., a lactation consultant and co-owner of The Pump Station, a breastfeeding-support center in Santa Monica, Calif. "You could read a book about playing the flute and learn a lot about the instrument," she explains, "but you won't really learn how to play the flute until you actually do it." Breastfeeding is no different. As with learning to play a musical instrument, success comes from a combination of motivation, knowledge of essential skills, and practice.

latch: step a

latch: step b

And as the old saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. Use the photos here as your guide to the techniques and positions you need to know for successful breastfeeding.

latch: step c

latch: step d

The latch
Any good lactation consultant will tell you: Latching is everything. Here's how to do it:

  • Position the baby on her side so she is directly facing you, with her belly touching yours. Next, prop up the baby with a pillow, if necessary, and hold her up to your breast; don't lean over toward her.
  • Place your thumb and fingers around your areola (see step a).
  • Tilt your baby's head back slightly and tickle her lips with your nipple until she opens her mouth wide (see step b).
  • Help her "scoop" the breast into her mouth by placing her lower jaw on first, well below the nipple (see step c).
  • Tilt her head forward, placing her upper jaw deeply on the breast. Make sure she takes the entire nipple and at least 1 1/2 inches of the areola in her mouth (see step d).

THE HOLDS

1. Cradle
Position your baby on your forearm, her head in the crook of your arm. Support her bottom with your other hand. Pull her in close to you, belly to belly, with her ear, shoulder and hip in a straight line.

Cradle

Football

2. Football
While useful for all women, this position is particularly helpful for mothers who have had a Cesarean section. Place your baby on a pillow, tucked close to your side. Rest your arm on the pillow to bring your baby's mouth up to your breast; support her head with your hand.

Side-lying

3. Side-Lying
This position is also helpful if you had a C-section or want to rest while nursing your baby. Lie on the side you will be breastfeeding on. Place your head on a pillow and draw your baby in close to you, using your arm to support her bottom. Use your other hand to bring your breast up to baby's mouth.
